The Opposite Effect
The tenure of President Obama, instead of uniting Blacks and Whites, gave America the opposite effect, it uncovered for us the rift right below the surface and audibly and visually showed to us just how divided of an America we have.
We are divided by what we believe in, where we went to school, what we eat, what we wear, our age group and what we do, among many others.
United States my a$$. It has always been Divided States, and of course "united" only for those people of the same color, creed, caste and personal choices. If we are not one of them, we are an outsider.
The news networks and social media egged us on, played on our prejudices and divided us even more -- they are the most to blame for all this.
What If
Now if we could go back in time to 2016, if the DNC didn't push (cheated even) for Hillary, if it was anyone else (maybe except for Bernie), if it was anyone else for real, or if they would have let Joe run (remember he was four years younger then, fewer gaffes and still no Hunter emails), he would have won.
In fact if it was anyone else except Hillary, this could have retained the White House for the Democrats. Anyone else would have beaten Trump.
For the Republicans, they also had a choice, even Ben Carson who was a Director of Neurosurgery, or even the CEO of HP if they would have been chosen to run, they could have won over Hillary and we wouldn't have been so divided right now.
Second What If
Now because that didn't happen and we had to choose between two evils -- Hillary and Donald (the two most polarizing presidential candidates ever to go head to head), and so pretty much regardless of who won, it would have been still a mess.

Now we could still have salvaged something if we could go back just one year, for this 2020 elections, the Democrats had so many choices (the most in a long time), there was the hedge fund manager, there was the Asian businessman Andrew Yang (of course no one cares about the Asian guy) but if they would have been given the chance to run, the White House might have been safely secured right on election night.
But of course like in 2016, they choose Joe (four years too late) and worse Kamala, the most liberal (read socialist) Democrat, even more so than Bernie, California her home State does not even like her that much (she was deemed unelectable during the primaries, funny how from April to August of this year, she turned from unelectable and worst enemy to let's have her as our VP).
But if they have chosen anyone else (maybe even the Asian guy or maybe not -- okay he is not from Mainland China but from Taiwan but most Americans may not know the difference anyway), but if it was anyone else, except Joe and Kamala, they would have beaten Donald Trump right on election night.

Aren't the Democrats surprised even scared out of their minds right now that after everything they've done to unseat Trump, and they did barely. Trump's base held and he still managed to sway moderates from both sides to choose him. Swing states are still 50-50 and at any given time can go one way or the other.
America is so split in the middle and conditions so volatile, it will be hard for either party to "unite" the divide.
